The Illusory Nature of the World

An artist once a picture painted
Of such a monster that he fainted.
So endlessly worlds transmigrate
By false ideas infatuate.

As stars, a fault of vision, as a lamp,
A mock show, dew drops, or a bubble,
A dream, a lightning flash, or cloud,
So should we view what is conditioned.

Nothing's really what it seems: nothing be.
Look up on a cloudless night,
Behold a field of stars so vast,
Its actual immensity despite,
Small glitterings from the past.

At times the full moon seems so large,
At others, so much smaller and far.
A washtub? A basketball? A dinner plate?
My first time at the seashore I recall,
Down the horizon I saw the sun fall.
Behold! That's where the earth terminates,
The water tumbling over in a hugh water fall.

But as I grow older,
Nothing is the matter.
Seeing is not believing:
The truth is in its living.

Two girls together our favourite thing.

Hush! Hush! Lest everyone knows.

Love birds we two
In calm and rough times
We swim free through.
Sing me a song of rhymes
And I'll comfort you
With poems of truth.

Hark! Hear that calling?
Our love shall shine
With glory and grace,
Which we'll embrace
For ever lasting,
Spirits truly "uplifting."
